VDM Metals adds OMP Plus for Forecasting and S&OP as next step on journey to Supply Chain Excellence

August 31, 2017

VDM Metals

VDM Metals is a global provider of solutions, products and services in the world of metallic high-performance alloys, and the leading international supplier of alloyed materials in semi-finished forms. Finding a way to manage complex production routes whilst at the same time meeting stringent quality requirements, is of vital importance in this demanding environment.

The Challenging Metals Planning (CHA.M.P.) project has modeled, optimized and digitized the complete value chain into a single operational planning system. End-to-end visibility was created through the connection of upstream and downstream activities, including subcontractors, in a single operational plan. This increased flexibility and improved service and inventories.

Following the successful implementation of OMP Plus for Operational Planning and Order Promising for its production sites in Germany, VDM Metals has now chosen to complete the digitization of the supply chain processes with the implementation of OMP Plus for Forecasting and Sales & Operations Planning.

By adding Forecasting and S&OP, VDM Metals wants to further extend their integrated supply chain approach. Next to mid-term internal and external capacity requirements, intermediate stock targets and raw material requirements will be derived from customer demand and commercial forecasts. This allows to shorten customer lead times and to significantly improve the delivery performance. Statistical forecasting techniques, collaborative forecasting and integrated Sales & Operations Planning will be implemented to support the annual budget process as well as the monthly rolling forecasting process.

Marcell Sehner, Senior Vice President Supply Chain Management at VDM Metals says: “VDM Metals is exploiting the potential of the OMP Plus solution by optimizing service level, inventory and throughput. We are confident that we will achieve the ambitious targets we have set. As CHA.M.P. is the foundation needed to continue meeting these demanding targets, we look forward to further integrating our supply chain processes.”

Michael Schickentanz, Head of Operational Planning & Master Data Management at VDM Metals and project manager for both OMP Plus projects, explains why they like to work with OM Partners: “We were looking for an integrated, scalable and optimization-driven solution and we found it in OMP Plus. During the project, we noticed that OM Partners’ commitment goes far beyond excellent software. They have a true understanding of our business and our challenges. I am confident that we will also make the second project a great success.”

Paul Vanvuchelen, Director Customer Solutions at OM Partners adds: “From the beginning, VDM Metals had a clear vision on their supply chain roadmap. We are very happy to assist them on their journey to Supply Chain Excellence. They have a clear focus, a strong dedication to succeed and full empowerment from top management. This journey allows them to not only deal better with today’s challenges, but will also strengthen them to cope with future challenges.”
